What is Sleep Insomnia?

Insomnia is not just a normal sleep loss, do you know what is sleep insomnia? Insomnia is a very common problem: around 15 percent of all patients attending their family doctor to complain about it (often as one of a number of complaints). In another article, we already discuss specifically with sleep loss causes, and in many people’s minds, this is equated with insomnia.

But insomnia is not simply a matter of losing sleep. In fact, as we shall be showing how will insomnia affect you, the vast majority of insomniacs actually lose far less sleep than they feel they do.

We hope this will be reassuring to all those who experience long-term dissatisfaction with their sleep-for this is what insomnia really is.

When someone says he suffers from insomnia he is saying something about his subjective experience: that he feels his sleep is displeasing to him because it is either slow in coming, broken by periods of wakefulness, or because it leaves him feeling tired and un-refreshed by day.

What is sleep insomnia?

Insomnia is not a disease; it is a complaint, much as a pain in the tummy is not a disease but a complaint. Like a tummy pain, insomnia can be the result of any one of several different root causes.

And, like the complaint of pain, insomnia takes on a social dimension by evoking a direct response from other people. The insomniac, no less than the sufferer from physical pain, wants the sympathy and support of close family and friends and, when the dissatisfaction becomes intolerable, the family doctor.

What is sleep insomnia

Our subjective experience cannot be measured by someone else, but only by each of us ‘measuring’ our pain today on some sort of inner scale and telling either ourselves, or somebody else, that it is worse than yesterday, or not nearly as bad as it was a week ago.

Nor can we say if your pain is worse than anther’s similarly, we cannot say if one person’s subjective experience of poor sleep indicates a greater degree of poorness than that described by another person.

There may be a difference at all in the amount of disruption of sleep and no difference in its restorative quality (though we are not yet able to measure this last very accurately).

It is just then some people can be more affected by the feeling of bad sleep than others.
