The main functions of leadership is to explain the importance of cooperative efforts and direct those efforts towards the attainment of the goal. The following are the functions of leadership:

  • Integration: One of the main functions of leadership is to integrate the efforts of his followers and to direct them towards organization goals. The leader integrates the efforts of the group and without those common objectives.
  • Communication: In order to integrate the efforts of the members to the group communication to organizational policies, procedure and programmers is necessary. A leader communicates authority and responsibility of each individual so that he may come to know that he is to do and what not.
  • Production Emphasis: A leader should follow the production oriented supervisory style of leadership but not at the cost of human relations and he should do ass to increase the production and productivity of the organization.
  • Representation: A leader represents the organization and its objectives before those who work for it and before those who are outsiders. He represents workers before the higher management and outsiders and represents management before the workers.

  • Fraternity: Leadership should promote fraternity among the subordinated. Leadership approach and its style play an important role in developing industrial harmony. He should develop a climate of cooperation among workers in the organization to achieve the success.
  • Organization: Organization capacity of a leader is an important trait. In organizing the activities of a group, he is to decide who will do what and how? He provides necessary inputs to get the work done effectively.
  • Evaluation or performance: A leader must evaluate the performance of his subordinates. If a worker does well he should be adequately rewarded and if he fails in discharging his responsibility.
  • Initiation: A leader should take initiative to introduce changes, wherever necessary, in the organization and the group’s efforts. He should communicate the changes and reasons behind them to convince the workers from its rationality.
  • Domination: Leader dominates NS followers. He holds authority and some organizational power and use his power any way consecutively or destructively. He can ignore his follower’s wishes but he should not do that.
